Duration

4 Training days which consist of both theory and practical tasks. Plus assisting with planning and delivery of a minimum of 3 Forest Schools Sessions (usually a minimum time commitment of 3 x half a day) and completion of a portfolio (coursework). The course must be completed within six months of the start date.

Description

This four day course offers a detailed understanding of practical skills focused on the sustainable use of woodlands. It also provides a theoretical framework for planning, learning and play in a Forest School environment. The course is specifically designed for individuals to support a Level 3 Forest School Leader. 

 

Units studied: Supporting Learning, Play and Development in the Outdoors; Sustainable Use and Management of Natural Resources; Outdoor Practical Skills; Assisting at Forest School.

Skills and understanding gained:

  • Understanding of theories of learning, play and development, and how they can be impacted by behaviour and supported by outdoor learning
  • Ability to carry out a range of practical tasks, for example using hand tools, tying knots, building shelters, and lighting campfires
  • Understanding of the ecology of a natural learning environment and the sustainable use of natural resources.

PLEASE NOTE : individuals must have link to a Forest School Leader in order to fulfill training requirements of assisting in 3 sessions.

Assessment
  • Attend 4 training days (a mixture of theory and practical skills, which will be assessed) 
  • Assist with the training and delivery of at least 3 Forest School sessions  
  • Completion of a portfolio  
Prerequisites
  • Established link with Forest School Practitioner (Forest School Leader Level 3 or above). 
  • Aged 16 years or over. 
  • Level 1 qualification or equivalent (1 GCSE). 
  • Current DBS Check. 
  • A suitable First Aid qualification is useful to complement this course (can be completed after training dates). FSSNPT offer fully accredited Outdoor First Training
