Assisting Forest School – Level 2 Award

This four day course offers a detailed understanding of practical skills focused on the sustainable use of woodlands. It also provides a theoretical framework for planning, learning and play in a Forest School environment. The course is specifically designed for individuals to support a Level 3 Forest School Leader. 

Outdoor Play Practitioner – Level 2 Award

Focused on a holistic view of children’s play and supporting this free-play rather than ‘teaching’, this qualification will give you the underpinning knowledge and practical skills to become an advocate for play in all its forms. 

Working Outdoors with Children with Additional Learning Needs

Come and share our experiences of working with children with a wide range of needs and learn tried and tested approaches we’ve used to ensure they are engaged and included. Understand how outdoor learning can support emotional learning and behaviour management.

Outdoor First Aid – delivered by Red Dragon 1st Aid

This course delivered by Red Dragon 1st Aid is recommended for anyone working outdoors, particularly those wishing to become a Level 3 qualified Forest School Leader

Outdoor First Aid courses can be described as emergency care for remote locations. It is not about advanced skills, but being confident and competent in using basic skills for extended periods of time and anticipating changes in the casualties status by good observation and recording of vital signs.

The course covers 2 units:

Unit 1 Emergency First Aid Skills: Leads to an Emergency First Aid at Work qualification

Unit 2 First Aid for Outdoor Incident Management: Leads to the ITC Certificate in Outdoor First Aid qualification.

The outline course structures and teaching methods are awarded by SQA and RQF accredited Awarding Body/Organisation ITC

Forest School Leader (Level 3)

This Forest School Leader training is designed for those who would like to set up and run a Forest School programme. By the end of this course, you’ll have the skills and understanding you need to inspire young people through regular, long-term play and learning in nature. 

Coastal School (Level 3 TOP UP)

This Agored Cymru level 3 QCF top-up unit enables you to use what you already know as a Forest School Leader, develop the new skills and knowledge required and apply them to the coastal environment to plan, run and evaluate Coastal School sessions for children.

Outdoor Food Hygiene

The course follows the Level 2 Award in Food Safety syllabus with emphasis on cooking in an outdoors environment and specific requirements of Environmental Health Officers.

It covers topics such as types of bacteria, contamination and cross contamination, temperature danger, hand washing and PPE, waste and pests, and stage cleaning.

The link to each course is provided on the ‘Upcoming Courses’ page. You are able to book your space by following the link and paying a deposit upon booking. The remainder of the course fee is to be paid prior to the start of the course.

If you are unsure which is the best course for your career path or experience, please contact the team via office@forestschoolsnpt.org.uk to discuss. If you are looking for something non-accredited, general upskilling, inset days or team building we can discuss your needs to determine a bespoke course.

You must hold a level 2 or have relevant experience in a related field – if in doubt, contact the team to discuss your qualifications and experience to determine course suitability. We’re unable to accept trainees that do not meet the prerequisites.

In short the sooner your portfolio is completed the sooner you can submit. There is a deadline for submission, you are required to submit before this deadline.

When registering for a course your registration is open for 2 years, you must submit within this timeframe or will incur a further renewal fee for the registration.

Extenuating circumstances are taken into account and should be communicated to your trainer.

Each course assessment is detailed on the course page – it can vary from course to course.

Formal extensions are granted at the discretion of the trainer, without extenuating circumstances there may be a late fee applied.

If a trainee wishes to complete more than 2 years after their start date of the course without extenuating circumstances, there will be a full registration fee to be paid in order to submit.

Registration fees vary for courses, contact your trainer if this applies to you.

For in-person training the courses are run at the Bishops Wood Countryside Centre, Caswell, Swansea or in the surrounding area.

There may be blended learning courses on offer which will involve a mixture of in-person and online training.

Your trainer is your mentor, there to support you should you have any questions throughout the duration of your course.

We encourage peers to communicate with one-another throughout the course and afterwards too.

A tutorial will be provided leading up to the deadline in preparation for completing your portfolio.

Should you need to report any extenuating circumstances or difficulties the team is available.

There is no need to apply, you may book your place on a course however should you not meet the prerequisites you will not be able to continue with the course.

Unfortunately deposits taken upon booking are non-refundable. We advise any prospective trainees to get in touch with the team first.

If you email the team, we’ll put your name on our waiting list and you will be contacted when a space comes available or when we have the next dates confirmed for training courses before they are published.

No, your forest school or outdoor learning qualifications do not need to be renewed. Keep your certificate safe as employers will want a copy of them. You may request replacements to AGORED however this will incur a fee.

Upon completion of your course, provided you passed, your First Aid Qualification is valid for 3 years.

Here at Forest School Swansea Neath and Port Talbot we run regular forest school sessions across the community for a variety of age groups.

You may wish to conduct your observations at our sessions, these would be based in our local area.

If this is something that would benefit you, you can contact your trainer or the Forest School Manager.

If you are doing a level 3 course, you are encouraged to gather your equipment in preparation and to practice skills.

Level 3 trainees can purchase a discounted ready made kit available from our partner ‘Outdoor Learning Resources’ – discount codes are available once your course has been booked.

Kits are delivered to us and made available for you on your first day of training. If you are gathering your own equipment, please consider the following:

An enrolment key will be given to all trainees on their first day of training, this is what you’ll need to create a new account on the Cambium Online Moodle. The Moodle will be your online learning environment to access resources.
